The assumption that Keoua's warriors were the only ones trudging through the mud during the 1790 eruption was badly shaken when quite a number of footprints like these were found heading toward the crater. It isn't known what this particular group had in mind, but it is now known that the Kilauea crater area was busily traveled by ancient Hawaiians for many reasons, including bird-catching and quarrying. Still, it seems even more surprising that these people felt a need or desire to travel here during an explosive eruption.
