Dripping Lava

return to Hawaii Page or Go To Next Picture

Lava tubes are formed when switfly moving molten lava starts to form crusts called "benches" along its more slowly moving edges. These benches grow until they meet in the middle and form the roof of a tube. The tube itself is what is left after the molten lava drains away. This whole process can produce many strange formations, like these solidified drips from the ceiling.
