Lava tubes, like all other caves, are potentially dangerous. This big chunk of spired lava fell from the roof of the tube in a kind of hinging motion that made it land with the spires up. Fortunately, it happened long before we got there. Nevertheless, rough lava, cracks and crevices, thinly-covered pits, falling rocks, earthquakes, and - walking around inside an active volcano - the potential for an eruption at any time, all help to make caving in Hawaii an exciting adventure.
