What Do They Mean?

No matter what you may read or hear, no one today (and that includes Hawaiians) has any idea what these symbols were intended to represent. The reason is that the intended meaning was in the mind of the artist. We can make guesses based on what we think they ought to or could mean, but guesses are all they will ever be. On the other hand, if we want to use one of these symbols for our own purpose, we have the freedom to give it any meaning we choose.
