From a slight rise next to the petroglyph area, we can see the steam billowing from the current (mid-2006) molten lava flow into the ocean from the Pu'u 'O'O vents.
This whole area is covered with lava flows, some ancient and some recent (Kalapana village nearby was completely covered in 1990), and liquid magma moves and shifts under all of it, deep in some places and spilling out in others. And yet here are the petroglyphs of Pu'u Loa. Here, and nowhere else.
