HANALEI HEIAU

A View Of The Top

Originally the heiau may have had a structure on it and/or wooden images, and there may have been a wall around the whole area. Because of its location in the intensely-cultivated Hanalei Valley the heiau was most likely dedicated to agricultural ceremonies and possibly even training. Its placement - facing the river with a stream coming down on either side - indicates that it was probably a very important site.
