Very little of the original skill of the Menehune stoneworkers is visible any more. The Menehune shaped and fitted their stones. The simple piling of rocks as shown here was a later Hawaiian style. In 1819, by edict of King Kamehameha II, the Hawaiian religious system was overthrown because it had become too burdensome to the people (especially to the chiefs). Priesthoods were abolished, images were cast down, and heiaus were taken over for common purposes. Poliahu Heiau was used by Queen Deborah Kapule, wife of the last king of Kauai, Kaumuali'i, as a corral for livestock.
