These are "nalo meli," the current guardians of the sacred space, and all must beware of arousing their anger. This natural hive hangs right over the amphitheater and may surprise the scientists on their next visit. "Nalo meli" is translated as "honeybee," but the word "nalo" in Hawaiian also means "to conceal."
