THE TEMPLE OF MU

A Clay Mine

Return To Kauai Page or Go To Next Picture

The pile of dirt turned out to be a barrier intended to protect a mine cut into a vein of red clay. Since ancient times Hawaiians have used red clay, which they call 'alaea, for medicine, for dyes, for ceremonies, and to mix with salt for flavor and other reasons. Red salt, at least, can still be found in grocery stores today.
