On the north shore of Maui, easily accessible from the town of Kahului, are two heiaus very close together which have been partially restored. Each one sits on a large sand dune which is so old that some of the sand has turned to rock. This view of Hale Ki'i shows how the heiau covered the top of the dune. Like all well-placed heiaus it faces the ocean and in former times it had a stream running along each side. One stream is now completely dry and the other has become a residential street.
To reach this site take Kahului Beach Road to Waiehu Beach Road (second light) and continue across a bridge to Kuhio Place. Turn left to Hea Place; turn left again and continue up to the parking area.
