The peaceful 'Iao Stream was the scene of a terrible battle in 1790 between the armies of Kahekili, the king of Maui, and Kamehameha the Great from the Big Island. Kamehameha won the battle and there were so many dead troops clogging the stream that the battle was called "Kepaniwai," the damming of the waters.
