Keoua's warriors and followers were heading home toward his headquarters in what is now the little town of Pahala, at the base of Mauna Loa, seen in the distance. For a long time archeologists thought that this party was the only one to have crossed the area during the 1790 eruption and, in fact, they thought it was rare for any Hawaiians to go near Kilauea crater at any time.
