A Rocky Bed

This photo shows one of hundreds of crescent-shaped shelters called palulu makani found around the Kilauea crater. They are almost identical to those found at the summit of Haleakala on Maui. Apparently, such shelters were mainly used as very temporary windbreaks, as no traces of roof materials or tool artifacts have been found in or around them. Also, no one knows why they were consistently made with a sloping edge.
