According to archeologists, Kapoho Crater has been intensively terraced, presumably for food crops that could take advantage of the rains captured by the crater. The surrounding lands are rich in minerals, but so porous they don't hold water very long, and there are no rivers or streams in the entire Puna (southeast) District. This wall is at the summit, and its primary function seems to be to keep you from falling off the steep precipice on the other side.
